Potter Reunion Schedule for July 15, 2017

It is almost time for reunion on Saturday July 15th, so here is a list of what we plan for certain times of the day. Also read the next post (from 6/14) for more details.

First of all,  we will need help setting up the reunion tent. Those who can help please get in touch with Jeremy to arrange when. Will need to be set up and taken down on the same day, 7/15. Joe, I believe this is stored at your house?

ALSO, remember to plan and gather your family theme basket, large item or donation for the raffle. We still need some large coffee cans to hold the raffle tickets so if you have some please leave them at Sandi's or Mum's house. Sandi's grandkids are going to decorate them.

Suggest you bring lawn chairs. There are picnic tables there for our use. You can bring canoes, kayaks or motor boats – the motor boats will have to be launched at Dead Stream and can be brought into the left / west of the beach area although use caution as it is somewhat rocky.

Readfield Town Beach “Rules”:

There is no lifeguard on duty

No smoking or alcoholic beverages on the beach (Can go to the Weathervane to buy and drink alcoholic beverages if wish to).

No glass allowed on the beach

SO, the day will go…

9:00 am

Readfield Town Beach opens for people to start arriving; We will have coffee and donuts there for early arrivals and people setting up the family reunion tent;

10:00 am

Dale will lead a history walk of the Readfield Fairgrounds trail and share some stories about Readfield Grange Fair as well as where it all happened. Hopefully others will go along who remember the Fair. We will stop at the Union Meeting House (UMH), on the loop back, to see the trompe l'oeil artwork (they are doing work there) and interior of that historic building. July 15th is the UMH Strawberry Festival 1-3pm so we are arranging a "take out" of shortcakes for snacks later in the day, while supporting UMH at the same time. Meet at the Readfield Town Beach parking lot at 10am and we will walk from there to begin at the trailhead on Main Street;

12:00 noon

Arrive before noon with your picnics. Ideally, we would like to eat together at noon;

1:00 pm

A (non-alcoholic) toast, personal tributes and Happy 90th Birthday cake for Uncle Buster. Bring him a card and include a favorite memory and / or something you admire about him. Can read out loud, or have someone do that for you if wish to;

1:30-2:00 pm

Family Meeting (may be a little later, do when Uncle Buster celebration and tributes are done):

2:00 pm

Last raffle tickets and 50/50 tickets sold at 2:00pm / end of family meeting, immediately followed by drawing of Family Raffle items and 50/50 raffle. Count ballots for what organization(s) will receive half of the 50/50 Raffle proceeds.

2:00-3:00 pm

Family group photos by Harv. Those who do not plan to be there at 2pm please make sure you connect with Harv  when you are there.

All day

Swimming, volleyball, horseshoes, swings, jungle gym, kids’ craft activities, boating, lawn games and last but not least, visiting, hugging, laughing and giving thanks for each other. Oh, and eating.

6:00 pm

Take down our reunion tent. We will need helpers for this. Those who wish to can remain at the Beach until dusk. Gather at Weathervane for dinner and / or drinks is an option, although we are not making reservations for that - you are on your own for that part.

We hope to see each and every one of you there, and can’t wait to see what you pack in YOUR Prampy picnic!! Can email Dale with questions at crossings4u@gmail.com

POTTER FAMILY REUNION on SATURDAY, JULY 15, 2017

Potter Family Reunion is a little more than a month away so it is time to catch you up on plans we have made thus far. First of all, we will be holding reunion rain or shine, and hope you are all able to make it.

Where:

Readfield Town Beach, Lake Maranacook on Main Street (route 17) behind the Weathervane Restaurant.

When:

Saturday, July 15th Come any time after 9:00 a.m. The beach closes at dusk

BRING:

  1. Your Own Picnic for Noon:  This in honor of my Dad who loved to take us for Sunday rides in the summer. My Mom packed “Prampy picnics” for us to enjoy along the way. So, no cooking this year – just visit, play and enjoy each other!
  2. Chairs: There are picnic tables there but if you have a favorite, comfortable lawn chair(s) we suggest you bring them.
  3. Bathing suits and towels: The beach is open for swimmers throughout the day. NOTE, there are no life guards.
  4. Uncle Buster turns 90 that week. Please bring him a card and include a note to tell him what he means to you and / or share a special memory!
  5. Bring lawn games if you have some you would like to share / play. There is plenty of lawn space to do so.
  6. Boats, if you wish – canoes, kayaks and motor boats. You will have to launch motor boats at Dead Stream boat landing on Winthrop Road. There is a place to moor them, to the west side of the beach, although take care as that area of the shore is somewhat rocky. Will have to carry canoes and kayaks from the parking lot to the lake.
  7. Fishing is ok as long as not done near the swimming area.

Amenities and Activities:

  1. We will not need to rent porta-potties this year because Readfield Rec has some there throughout the summer.
  2. We plan to put up the big family reunion tent and there are several picnic table shelters already there.
  3. There are volley ball and horse shoe courts on the grounds we can use. Readfield Rec has some horseshoes but suggest you bring your own volleyball if wish to play.
  4. We are working on planning kids’ activities. For one, we plan to do tie die T shirts. Materials and shirts will be there.
  5. From 2-2:30ish we will be doing family pictures. Harv has agreed to do this for us. Hopefully everyone will be around at that time. If not, look up Harv while you are there so he can be sure to take your pictures.
  6. PLEASE NOTE: No glass or alcohol is allowed in the area. Alcoholic beverages can be purchased and consumed at the Weathervane if desired.

IMPORTANT!!! The Auction is Changing:

Instead of our traditional live auction, we will be doing a raffle. SO, each branch of the family please bring a “theme basket” or a large item your branch of the family chips in on, makes or donates. We will have a roll of tickets to sell, 15 for $10 or $1 each, then you get to place your ticket(s) on the item(s)  you wish to take chances on. The drawings will take place at the end of the day and you need not be present to win. Monies from this will go into our family reunion credit union account.

50/50 Raffle:

We will also have a 50/50 raffle and ½ of the winnings will go to a non-profit or town association. We will have “ballots” that lists several local charities / non-profits so each family member, regardless of age, can vote on which one(s) they would like to see the money go to. Voting for more than one is OK. So you can think about it ahead of time, the list will include:

  1. Readfield Recreation Association (RRA)
  2. Readfield Historical Society
  3. Readfield Union Meeting House
  4. Other / write in ____________________
PLEASE do pass this info on to anyone in your immediate family who is not online or has email. We will NOT be mailing reminders via snail mail. This info has also been posted on our reunion Facebook page. Any questions? Fire away to Dale at crossings4u@gmail.com

INITIAL PLANS FOR JULY 15, 2017

FROM DALE 5/10/2017:
To give you all an initial update for the Family Reunion for this year, on July 15, 2017. We have rented the Readfield Town Beach for the day. Will be a one day reunion this year. We are working smart, not hard. No cooking - each family bring a picnic lunch, enough to feed your family. If you choose to share it with others that is great, but we are each responsible for our own lunches. When Sandi and I were growing up Mum and Dad took us for Sunday rides and picnics every summer Sunday and we called them "Prampie Picnics". So, the picnic is in Prampie (Dad's) honor! There are BBQ pits for those who do wish to cook their own lunch. There are picnic tables there we can move and use as wish. It is ok to set up our white tent that morning - will need some volunteers to help with that and I will make sure those doing that know where we can set that up. It will have to be set up and taken down on the same day. We have the beach all day from 9am on. There is a volley ball court, swings, horse shoes (going in next week) and swimming - of course. No lifeguards there. Can bring kyacks, paddle boards and canoes if wish and there is a place where motor boats can be brought in - off to the side - although somewhat rocky and requires care. Would have to launch them at Dead Stream though. There is plenty of parking and porta pottie is already there. Bring lawn chairs. No drinking alcohol and NO GLASS on the property. Weathervane is right there for those who want to drink alcohol. The Old Fairgounds trail is nearby for those who wish I would be happy to give a walking tour and history lesson of the Old Fairgrounds - stong ties to Grandpa and Grammie during their Granger days.
We will be sharing more deatils about plans for the day later but in the meantime wanted you to know our plans thus far. Ask questions you may have, please, so we can address at our "Henry and Evelyn family planning meeting". Contact me at crossings4u@gmail.com with questions, or call / text me if you have my cell phone #. Thanks!
